Rays Acquire Aybar From Atlanta
The Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-player trade today as the Braves acquired left-handed pitcher Jeff Ridgway from the Rays in exchange for infielder Willy Aybar and minor-league infielder Chase Fontaine.
Ridgway, 27, went 2-3 with a 3.06 ERA and four saves in a team-leading 54 games for Triple-A Durham in 2007 before making three relief appearances in the majors after being recalled on September 16. With Durham, he struck out 67 hitters in 64.2 innings pitched. He held left-handed hitters to a .163 batting average while right-handed hitters hit for a .269 batting average.
Cardinals, Jays Complete Swap Of Third Basemen
The Cardinals and Toronto finalized an exchange of All-Star third basemen Monday, sending Gold Glove winner Scott Rolen north for the slugger Troy Glaus. The trade leaves Albert Pujols as the only remaining member of the vaunted MV3 and the leader of a whittled core. Jim Edmonds and Rolen have been traded this winter; World Series' MVP David Eckstein left via free agency.
"I think it is going to be a good move for both clubs," Eckstein said Monday. "St. Louis was looking for someone to back Albert up, that power bat, and Troy definitely fits that. And this will be a good thing for Scott. We know the situation with Scott, and this is his fresh start."
Braves To Acquire CF Kotsay From A's
The Atlanta Braves have reached a preliminary agreement to acquire center fielder Mark Kotsay from the Oakland Athletics, filling the hole created by the departure of Andruw Jones.
The deal will be finalized once Kotsay passes a physical for Atlanta, where he is expected to fly to on Sunday, and assuming the Commissioner's Office approves the cash negotiated to be exchanged in the deal, sources say.
In return for Kotsay, the Braves are trading pitcher Joey Devine, and Oakland will assume $5.325 million of the $7.325 million owed to the center fielder for this year.
Kotsay, 32, played in 56 games in 2007 after having back surgery, hitting .214 with 15 extra-bases hits in 206 at-bats. In 2005, before Kotsay began having serious back trouble, he batted .280, with 51 extra-base hits and a .325 on-base percentage.
Mets Trade Meyers, Coles For Cubs' Pagan
The Mets on Saturday acquired outfielder Angel Pagan from the Cubs for righthander Ryan Meyers and outfielder Corey Coles.
Pagan is returning to the Mets' organization for a second stint. The Cubs originally acquired Pagan from New York for cash on January 25, 2006.
In 71 games with Chicago last season, the 26-year-old Pagan batted .264 with four homers and 21 RBI.

The Athletics made their second major trade in three weeks, sending outfielder and fan favorite Nick Swisher to the White Sox for three minor leaguers on Thursday.
The A's -- who dealt ace Dan Haren to Arizona on Dec. 14 -- received left-hander Gio Gonzalez, right-hander Fautino De Los Santos and outfielder Ryan Sweeney.
